Central Bank of Nigeria Withdraws Cellulant’s Mobile Money License

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has decided to revoke the mobile money license of Cellulant Nigeria, a subsidiary of Cellulant Corporation, one of Africa’s pioneering fintech firms. This development, disclosed in a letter addressed to Cellulant, became effective on December 6, 2023. The CBN, in its letter to Cellulant, stated that the mobile money license was being revoked following Cellulant’s decision to discontinue its operation. Cellulant, which secured $54.5 million in funding across three rounds between 2014 and 2018, faced internal challenges in recent times.
